massive storm wreaks havoc on the Côte d’Azur

Last night the equivalent of two months of rain fell in the space of two hours on towns such as Cannes, Nice, Antibes and all along the coast and inland. Flash flooding, landslides, fallen trees and people trapped Inside their cars.  The town of Grasse was the hardest hit.

American actor, Rob Lowe, used Instagram and Twitter to share pictures of his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, being rescued from a house in Grasse. The first photo caption read:

“My wife being rescued this a.m. in the horrific flooding in Grasse, France. Glad we are safe. Grateful to first responders”.

He posted a second picture showing rain water gushing downstream just outside the house.

“This is right outside the house. Was twice as high at the worst, just before sunrise”.

According to reports, rivers in Grasse overflowed from 7 am. One man recorded a video while he was trapped inside his 4×4 on his way to work this morning. He found himself surrounded by water half way up the car doors, about 1.5 metres high.  To date, 19 are feared dead.
