3 American heros

I’ve just watched the trailer of Clint Eastwood’s new movie, The 15:17 to Paris. I like the title. It’s a true story based on three American men who averted a massacre on a European train. It was August 21, 2015 and the three boyhood friends were aboard a high-speed train en route to Paris from Amsterdam when an Islamist gunman opened fire. Along with two others — a French national and a Briton — they charged, tackled and subdued the jihadi.

The best part of Eastwood’s movie is that the three heros – Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos and Spencer Stone – are in it, and they play themselves!

On a personal level, the terrorist attack is particularly chilling because I have taken that same train and same route many times: to Amsterdam, Brussels and other destinations in Belgium and Holland.

For their bravery, French President Francois Hollande bestowed France’s highest honor on Sadler, Skarlatos and Stone and awarded them with the Legion of Honor. Chris Norman, a 62-year-old British consultant, was also decorated.
