the Louxor cinema house in Paris

Surfing the net looking for a movie theater in which to watch Raoul Peck’s “Je ne suis pas votre nègre” (I Am Not Your Negro), released tomorrow in France, I stumbled across the refurbished LOUXOR.

Built in 1921, it was transformed into a nightclub in 1983 – first a Caribbean nightclub and then the largest gay club in the city – before closing permanently in 1988. For twenty-two years the place was abandoned and left for ruin.  And then the City of Paris purchased it in 2003. It was entirely renovated and re-opened in 2013. Today it has three gorgeous screening rooms.

I can’t wait to go to the LOUXOR to see this new film.

  1. Once again just love your posts, at the house on Mount Desert Island in the cold and rain, spring not always great in New England.

    • Oh, thanks, Jim. Good to hear from you. If it’s any consolation, it’s freezing here (midnight). Early mornings, it’s around 42°F !

    • What I didn’t mention is that this renovated theater is in kind of a crummy district. So if you do go … watch your personal belongings!!

      I think La Pagode closed.

If you’re into movie theaters, there’s a fabulous state of the art one smack in central Paris called MAX LINDER. Awesome sound system and screen. Check it out. David Lynch presented his film there, Inland Empire.

And then on the Champs Elysées, on a little side street, is the beautiful BALZAC Cinema with its red velvet plush seats. I saw “Jackie” there. It’s got a little coffee bar. Classy place.
